After almost a year of backbreaking work, New Orleanians took the day off. They celebrated the best way they know how. They had a Parade. From the quarter to St Claude people were dressed up and festive. The city is on its way back and the people's spirits are high.

Enjoy this day of rest New Orleans, because tomorrow is another day of picking up the pieces that the unwanted visitor Katrina left behind.

This is a video I found regarding the flooding in the Lakeview are of New Orleans. I drove through Lakeview earlier today and nothing much if anything has changed. This area was one of the worst impacted in the New Orleans area. It lacked power and water for months. Looters ravaged what little people had left and problems still persist. I hop the residents of Lakeview can one day return to a more normal life in the wonderful city of New Orleans. Lakeview was home to many of our doctors, engineers, and other professionals. These individuals are being sought after by other cities in hopes of acquiring their talents. One more drain on the New Orleans area economy.

I know this is posted a bit late, but this man is a real American Hero in my eyes. I have never met General Honore, but would love to interview him on his experiences during the respone after Hurricane Katrina. Most people would want to ask him about the shortcomings or missteps of people. I would want to know how it felt to bring order from chaos. I would also want to know how great he felt that reporter asked a stupid question at just the right time to make one of the most memorable quotes of all time.

Jefferson Parish Library Summer Reading Program Enhanced by the Generosity of New York City’s Central Park Storytellers

From New Yorkers to the People of Louisiana with Love

Thanks to the generosity of Central Park Storytellers of New York City, Jefferson Parish Library’s Summer Reading Program has been enriched with the addition of programs by local children’s performers, funded by the Central Park Storytellers’ donation—a way for the storytellers to make a donation to the children of Jefferson Parish through its library Summer Reading Program.

Through their personal donations and fund raising, the Central Park Storytellers were able to provide the children of Jefferson Parish with six storytelling programs at public libraries this summer, four of which are still to come. Performances made possible by CPS include:

June 13 - Philip Melancon – “Melonsongs” at West Bank Regional Library

June 29 - North Kenner Library - Greyhawk Perkins – “Songs of Friends”

Wed., July 12, 1:30 PM – Rosedale Library - David Winkler-Schmit - “The Story-Go-Round”

Tues., July 18, 10:30 AM - Adella Gautier Terrytown Library – “Paws, Claws, and a Pebble to Wish Upon”

June 22 at Westwego Library and
Tues, August 1, 12:30 PM at Terrytown Library - Vee Duensing – “Fractured Fun Fairytales”

Reading in the New York Times, about the lack of government support after Katrina and thinking about the children and their parents who are suffering from homelessness and lack of community, Diane Wolkstein, director of the Central Park Storytellers, had the idea to organize a storytelling benefit to fund a storytelling program to bring joy and comfort to both the storytellers and the people in Louisiana. In this effort, Diane was joined by many people, storytellers Regina Ress, Therese Plair, and Ron Sopyla; Lynn Carter of the Scandinavia House, and Christian Sonne of the Hans Christian Andersen Committee, as well as anonymous friends

New Yorkers, storytellers and other folks, having experienced trauma and grief after September 11th, 2001, and remembering how the country responded to them during those difficult days, were grateful to be able to reach across the country to Louisiana’s children, knowing that stories help to heal and inspire with vision and possibility. According to the Central Park Storytellers, they “are proud to have contributed to the library storytelling program and hope that storytellers and story listeners of Louisiana will enjoy stories of inspiration, fun, and courage, for surely it is time for all of these.”

“ ‘Lost Bread’ was the name of a homemade and delicious dessert
that was passing out of practice when I was a child . . . .
based on stale bread and the belief that what was lost can now be found….”
from the “Introduction” to Ronnie Virgets’ LOST BREAD, written before Katrina

LOST BREAD
An Evening of Recollections, Reflections, and Ruminations
presented by
RONNIE VIRGETS
in conversation with Arthur Hardy

The public is invited to an evening of recollections, reflections, and ruminations at East Bank Regional Library as local personality, author, columnist, and entertainer Ronnie Virgets discusses his new book, LOST BREAD, with another local favorite, Arthur Hardy. Join us on Wednesday, May 31, at 7:00 PM, at East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Ave., Metairie, LA.

The program is free and open to the public, and registration is not required. A question-and-answer session and book signing will follow the presentation. Books will be available for purchase, made possible by Friends of Jefferson Public Library, with cash and checks accepted.

Ronnie will read from and talk about his just released book, LOST BREAD, with his friend and publisher of the book, Arthur Hardy. All of the pieces which appear in LOST BREAD were written before the storm, with one final exception. His “Diary of a Displaced Person,” which first appeared in the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities’ Winter 2005-06 LOUISIANA CULTURAL VISTAS, closes the book. If readers are already longing for the pre-hurricane New Orleans, it can still be found within the pages of LOST BREAD and recollected at the program on May 31st.

Ronnie Virgets is also the author of the now out-of-print HEY, CAP! – THE NEW ORLEANS VIEWS OF RONNIE VIRGETS and contributes a biweekly column, “Virgets,” to GAMBIT WEEKLY. He has served as the Master of Ceremonies for the recorded-live radio variety show WWNO’s CRESCENT CITY* recorded live from Le Chat Noir, has appeared on stage in various performances including “Win, Place, Show!” and has even been spotted in a Fairgrounds commercial with Pete Fountain.

He has worked as a Bourbon Street bartender, a journalism professor, a racetrack PR director, a newspaper sportswriter, and television commentator entertaining us with his New Orleans sketches and reflections. Ronnie has won many awards from the New Orleans Press Club for his writing in THE TIMES-PICAYUNE, GAMBIT WEEKLY, and NEW ORLEANS MAGAZINE. His awards for his television work include an Emmy.
Ray Nagin wins a second term for New Orleans Mayor. It was a close election, but Ray ended up taking the win. Mitch Landrieu put up a good fight against the incumbent Mayor. Mayor Nagin will move forward on his agenda for rebuilding the city of New Orleans. In his acceptance speech, Mayor Nagin thanked the President for all he has done to help rebuild New Orleans. He then thanked the Governor for all she will do to help New Orleans. Mayor Nagin seemed to throw a few jabs at lost supporters, the governor, and a guy to his right that was distracting him.

Mayor Nagin we congratulate you on your win for Mayor. We need this city rebuilt, so lets get going...
