A picture of a New Orleans street car only a few days before the storm. This is a Saint Charles street car photographed near Carrollton & St. Charles Avenue Turn. This is right near the Camellia Grill. Much of the Street Car Line in New Orleans was damaged by Katrina. Trees I believe did the most damage to the St. Charles street car line.
New Orleans street car history is a facinationing tale of charm, usefullness, and utter stupidity. New Orleans had the most amazing lines of Street Cars traversing the city until someone decided buses were better. Good thing the St. Charles line had survived. New Orleans has spent millions of dollars redoing the Canal line from the River to city park. It is really a facinating story and better told by Ed Branely. Ed has writtena book on Street Car history. Check out Ed's site at www.canalstreetcar.com.
