CALLIE'S TALLY
by Betsy Howie
Directed and designed by Loy Arcenas
Starring Lara Grice*, Carol Sutton*, Maria Mason*, and Morrey McElroy
There is an old saying that when it comes to love, you don't count the cost. But clearly, in an era when it takes upward of $200,000 to raise a child to age 18, it's high time to send the kids a bill. Betsy Howie realized this long before her daughter's birth. So while most people just groan about the small fortune they spend on their bundles of joy, Betsy decided to keep exact track. Over the course of 15 months - from late in her pregnancy to Callie's first birthday - Howie counts every penny she spends in the world premiere of this hilarious show, adapted from her best-selling book by the same name.

Callie's Tally was scheduled to open our 2005-06 season, but was cancelled due to hurricane Katrina. Betsy Howie generously donated her play to us and it was read as a benefit at more than a dozen theaters throughout the country this year.

August 23 - September 17, 2006
Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 pm, Sundays at 3 pm - Tickets $15 - $30 ($5 discount for expecting mothers)
To order: call 522-6545 or go online to our website at www.southernrep.com

Southern Rep is located in the Shops at Canal Place - 3rd floor

The Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus may well be the first gay men's chorus ever to take such a bold step in pushing for tolerance and acceptance for the gay community in this country when they take their song on the road in July 2006. The Chorus is planning a whirlwind tour that includes five stops in six days beginning in Nashville, Tennessee and ending in New Orleans, Louisiana. This will be the first national tour for the 25 year-old Chorus.

"Turning 25 has made us reflect upon where we have been and examine where we would like to be as an organization," said Joann Usher, Executive Director of the Chorus. "Outreach has always been an important part of our mission. We have worked hard to bring awareness and acceptance of the gay community in the Twin Cities and around the state and region. Now more than ever, though, we feel it is time to send an even stronger and louder message. By touring the South, we hope to raise a national awareness," she added.

The tour will include stops in Nashville, Tennessee; Birmingham, Alabama; Jackson, Mississippi; Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana. The Chorus plans to fly to Nashville where the tour will begin at the Historic Ryman Auditorium, home of the original Grand Ole Opry and then travel by bus to each of the stops on the tour, ending in New Orleans. The Chorus is taking 130 men on the tour.

"There have been a few tours by other gay choruses over the years. Most have focused on international tours. But when we began looking at doing a tour, it made sense to us to focus our energy in the U.S. ," said Dr. Stan Hill, Artistic Director of the Chorus.

"There is a lot of work to do right here at home, and we thought a tour of the South would be a perfect opportunity," he added.

Beneficiaries in New Orleans include:
* The New Orleans Gay Men's Chorus
* Metropolitan Community Church of Greater New Orleans
*  GLBT Community Coalition

The men of the chorus have also taken up a collection of over 1,000 personal care items to be donated to NO/Aids Task Force during their performance in New Orleans.

The Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus is an award-winning Chorus that has built a solid reputation for musical excellence and adventuresome programming. The organization was formed to build community through music, with the primary purpose of TCGMC being the pursuit of musical excellence in performance. In addition, Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus seeks to provide its members with rewarding musical experiences and to promote social exchange among a group of men with a common purpose. As an organization that celebrates diversity and uses music as a way to transform, educate and heal, TCGMC works towards the elimination of homophobia and intolerance through community outreach.

The men of the chorus are committedto fulfilling our mission of "Gay Men Building Community Through Music" by providing outreach concerts in support of other GLBT organizations throughout the United States. The men's committment to this tour is proof that we take this mission seriously and we will embrace this opportunity to reach out to other communities across the U.S.

If you are a professional actor or intend to be, you must make training
your top priority. Learn how to work for the camera on Monday night in
Metairie and on Tuesday night in Covington.

Both the Monday and the Tuesday classes will be given the opportunity
to present a showcase for a prominent casting director this summer. In
addition, students will be given training by a director of film and
television and may have the opportunity to conference with the director
of the office for film and video.

The next six-week session for the Monday class starts a week from now
on May 29th. If you're on the Northshore, you may be able to attend the
Tuesday class that started last week after a brief orientation this
coming Tuesday, May 23rd. E-mail actorsalliance@earthlink.net or call
(504) 812-3379 to make an appointment for this or for more information
and directions.

Accolades for my workshops and classes:

"You can learn a lot of significant things from a real proven actress."
- Buddy Blaum

"There was so much content, so many opportunities to apply what we were
learning."
- Cloe Carbine

"I saw improvement in students during the course of one class."
- Johnny Rock

"I enjoyed every part of class. Everything was extremely informative. I
learned a lot of vital information... detailed cold readings,
memorization techniques. Veleka is awesome. I felt so comfortable with
her."
- Rashonda Brokenberry

"I would like to publicly give my heart-felt endorsement to Veleka Gray
and her terrific teaching methods. All actors can use training and
refreshers to their craft. It's not just classes. It's an energizing
exercise! Growing up in California I was often exposed to movie and
television stars. Because of this I never get star struck and not many
people truly impress me. Veleka Gray did! She is amazing!
- Agent Dawn Landrum

"Perfect! Highly recommended!"
- Chuck Halley

Classes for teenagers meet on Tuesday afternoon in Covington, and a
class in Baton Rouge on Thursday will be available in the near future.
If you want workshops in places outside the New Orleans metropolitan
area, contact Tara Duncil at (318) 573-0039 to make arrangements.

There is a lot of business that will be coming into our state in the
next few years, and the article below that was posted on 5/4 in a Yahoo
group has some good info on the film studios being built around here.
If you have ever dreamed of being in the movies, now is your chance.
Take it!

Veleka
